Project Overview

We were appointed to deliver the installation, commissioning and certification of new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at Gate 36 within the Airside environment at Glasgow Airport.
The project involved the development of a new EV charging area on an existing open tarmac surface located outside the main terminal building, within 15 metres of both the terminal and the Airside boundary fence.
All works were undertaken within a live, high-security airfield environment, requiring strict compliance with airport regulations, detailed planning and close coordination with Glasgow Airport Engineering/Airfield Operations to facilitate the safe clearance of existing movable equipment and ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
Scope of Works

The project included:

• Coordination with airport operations to clear existing equipment from the work area
• Excavation of approximately 80m of trench (track) through existing tarmac
• Installation of new underground ducting to accommodate electrical power supplies
• Installation of cable chambers, equipment plinths and protective bollards
• Backfilling and reinstatement of tarmac to match existing Airside specifications
• Installation and termination of EV charge points
• Integration with existing Airside lighting and drainage systems
• Full testing and certification of electrical installation in accordance with BS 7671
• Commissioning and handover of EV charging infrastructure

Delivery Approach

Airside Compliant Planning: All operatives were fully Airside accredited, with works carefully programmed around airport operational constraints, security procedures and restricted access requirements.
Stakeholder Coordination: Close collaboration with Glasgow Airport Engineering/ Airside Operations and safety teams ensured the safe clearance of the site and smooth project delivery.
Programme Certainty: A 6-week programme was developed and maintained through detailed sequencing of civil and electrical works, supported by regular coordination meetings.
Quality & Compliance: All works were delivered in accordance with airport standards, including electrical regulations (BS 7671), tarmac reinstatement specifications and Airside safety requirements.

Challenges & Solutions

The challenges and solutions included:

High-security Airside environment: Strict access controls, escort requirements and permit systems were implemented, with all personnel trained in Airside Safety Procedures.
Proximity to terminal and boundary fence (within 15m): Careful planning and controlled working methods ensured safe execution without impacting adjacent infrastructure or operations.
Existing services (lighting and drainage): Pre-construction surveys and cautious excavation techniques were used to avoid disruption to existing systems.
Obstructed work area: Early coordination with Glasgow Airport Engineering/Airfield Operations enabled efficient clearance of movable equipment prior to commencement.
Maintaining operational continuity: Works were phased and scheduled to minimise disruption within the live airport environment
